Remembering al-Nakba

Wednesday 29 November marks the passage of the 1947 United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181. As the result of the deliberations of this body, historic Palestine, which had most recently been under a British Mandate, was divided into three parts. Two states were created, an Arab one comprising 42% of the land, and a Jewish one, receiving 56%; the third part, the remaining 2% centered around Jerusalem and was to come under international governance. Confessions of a Human Rights Hoosier (chapter 12)

My friend Mohammad Fourage loves kids. "The kids," he says, "they are thing about the life." And they are. The kids in Balata Refugee Camp are fearless and fiery; they speak from way down deep in their chests like the Godfather, and they spot me far down alleys and come running. "Adjnebia, Adjnebia!" They come running like I have Snickers bars and shekels tied
to my clothes.

Confessions of a Human Rights Hoosier (chapter 11)

Salaam, y'all. I've been thinking a lot lately about a particular passage in the writings of Rachel Corrie. She talks about how she knew what "the unbearable lightness of being was, before I read the book. The lightness - between life and death, there are no dimensions at all, the difference between Hitler and my mother, the difference between Whitney Houston and a Russian mother watching her son fall through the sidewalk and boil to death...it's just a shrug...the difference between ecstasy and misery is just a shrug." How is Nablus?

A report released on August 26th said that 202 people had died in Palestine since June 28th. 44 of these people were children.

I saw the report on August 28th. More...

Confessions of a Human Rights Hoosier (Chapter 10)

Salaam, shalom, waaazup to everyone from beautiful Palestine. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and depressed today. I have been in Balata Refugee camp for 4 weeks now, and it is the belly of the beast. More...

Urgent Message

Hey everyone,

I received a call last night from Sylvester Browne who writes a column in the Post Dispatch. I think he is going to talk about Magan and I in his next column. I would really like to thank H for sending him the information, but we need more of this...more education, more talking, more coverage. Here is how YOU can do something easy to help.

After reading his column in the STL Post Dispatch this week, we must tell him and the STLPD that we want to hear more of this. Email or write him directly and thank him for the coverage. If you dont like something he says, tell him... he seems like a reasonable guy. If what he writes is great, than say this too.

Next WE MUST tell the STL Post Dispatch that we want more stories like this. We want fair and balanced coverage about the conflict. We are tired of only hearing about Israelis and suicide bombers. There have been 4 suicide bombings this year. Does anyone know how many Palestinians have been assassinated? How many homes have been demolished? Do you know how many people in Gaza are without power and water? Do you know that Thursday I saw a man get shot right in front of me for getting out of his car after being made to wait at a checkpoint for 6 hours in the desert heat? How much land is being confiscated for the illegal annexation wall? Do we ever see anything about illegal settlements? How many people are without medicine, jobs and money due to the severed economic aid? Tell them Americans dont only care about Mel Gibsons drunk ramblings and Tom Cruises latest breakup. We want intelligent media for intelligent people!

We must demand balance! We must support journalists who are brave enough to give us this balance. Please take a few moments, even if youve never done anything like this before, even if you dont have the time, even if you dont really care and you just get these emails b/c you know me and you love me. This is something small and easy to do for a people who are suffering greatly every day of their lives. The media wont cover it unless we ask them.

Please, please take the time to ask for this.
Anna

update - Im probably getting an Xray soon to see if they broke anything, and if they did Ill be pressing charges. Ill keep you updated.

I Was Beaten and Shot

image
Today I joined the Palestinians of Bilin in an action of nonviolent resistance against the theft of their land. The Israeli army is confiscating their farmland to make room for the illegal annexation wall and illegal Israeli settlements. Bilin has taken the issue to court (Israeli), and requested that the construction be put on hold, until a decision from the court is given. However, the request was denied and the construction continues. The people of Bilin will hold a demonstration every Friday until a decision from the court is given. More...

Peace Demonstrators Beaten in Bil’in

At today’s weekly demo against the Apartheid Wall in Bil’in soldiers attacked protesters with batons and fired rubber bullets at them from close range. Around 100 protesters including international and Israeli peace activists marching from the village mosque to the site of the Wall were confronted by lines of soldiers in riot gear at the edge of the village. Without provocation or intimidation the soldiers waded into the demonstration lashing out indiscriminately at the marchers. An American peace activist, Magan, suffered a concussion and severe bruising after being beaten on the forehead whilst Anna an American activist suffered severe hand injuries. More...
